Kananaskis Country is provincially protected land located west of Calgary covering the foothills and the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. This land was set aside for Albertans in 1978 by then Premier Peter Lougheed. It is a mixed-use area that incorporates industry, tourism, culture, recreation and environmental protection. The Path Less Taken has a variety of Kananaskis hiking options based on time, fitness and landscape. Here are a few front range favourites:

Nihahi Ridge
“Nihahi” is Stoney for rocky and this ridge definitely lives up to its name. A rocky vantage point anywhere along this ridge will provide stunning views of surrounding peaks and the vast expanse of the Elbow watershed.

Forget-Me-Knot Ridge
A steep ascent will even out into alpine meadows of flowers, including the petite, blue Forget-Me-Knots. This ridge provides views of the prairies to the east, mountains to the west and the chance of spotting a wild horse along the way.

Bryant Lake
The brilliant blue of Bryant Lake sits below a mountain sharing the same name. This trek travels up the rocky drainage of Upper Canyon Creek, crossing sparsely treed dryas flats and stony creek beds.

Mist Ridge
The Mist area of the Highwood has many trekking options. Mist Ridge is a stunning ridge walk with options to drop down in the Mist Creek Valley. A great place to choose your own adventure!

Centennial Ridge
Hike amongst the towering rock pillars of Centennial Ridge on the highest official trail of the Rockies. The tough, steep grind up to the summit of Mount Allan is worth it, as hikers travel through alpine meadows, past boulder giants, all with a 360° views of the front ranges.
